Winter Semester: classes held mid-October to mid-February Summer Semester: classes held mid-April to late July
Students are expected to select the majority of courses and/or credits from the subject area corresponding to their major at their home institution. They may choose up to two courses per semester from study programs in other departments/faculties. Admission to courses in other departments/faculties can be restricted, giving priority to degree students and students coming through a direct agreement with that particular department.
In addition, students may take courses from the School of Humanities (language courses, philosophy, soft skills).
Courses from career-integrated programs or the continuing professional education programs offered by the School of Advanced Professional Studies (SAPS) are not open to exchange students.
In general, the language of instruction is German. Most study programs offered at Ulm University are German-taught programs. However, there may be select courses taught in English even in German study programs. In addition, there are currently 12 master’s programs taught completely in English.
Medicine and Dentistry are strictly taught in German (including exams or clinical electives).
The university expects students to have at least level B2 in the language of instruction / working language.
Students who have only level B1 in German at the time of application may be accepted under the condition that they participate in the Intensive German Language Course prior to the beginning of their studies (September / March)
Students wishing to do practical work in a hospital (elective/clerkship/rotation) must prove that they have min. level B2 in German at the time of application.
The International Office provides housing assistance to all students who come to Ulm University in the framework of an exchange program with a partner university (including the Baden-Württemberg program partners). It is very difficult for international students to find furnished rooms or apartments in Ulm, even more so for temporary students, who need accommodation for only short-term periods. Students are therefore strongly advised to take advantage of this service. The International Office cannot give assistance in finding private accommodation or home stays!
Derek joined the UNCG Global Engagement Office as the International Programs Coordinator in 2023. He supports internationalization efforts at all UNC System campuses, including serving as the UNC System’s liaison for the Baden-Württemberg / UNC System Exchange Program. Derek has held two Fulbright grants to Germany, and he participated in undergraduate education abroad programs in Bosnia and Greece. He earned a PhD and MA in History from UNC Chapel Hill and a BA in History from the University of Denver. Derek is thrilled to help students experience new places and cultures.
