Courses not available to exchange students include the following:
- courses offered at the school of medicine and dentistry
- some courses in biosciences (restrictions may apply-see coordinator)
* Exceptions can be made only with permission from coordinator in Heidelberg
** Please note that Heidelberg University does not offer programs in Business or traditional Engineering.
Information on the course offerings for the coming semester will be available online a few months before the lecture period starts. However, course catalogs from previous semesters give a general overview of the courses offered at Heidelberg University.
There is no minimum German language requirement for exchange students from US partner institutions.
Typically, courses are taught in the German language. However, there are several fields of study with a (large) variety of courses taught in English:
- English Studies
- American Studies
- Economics
- South Asian Studies
- Transcultural Studies
There are usually also a few courses offered in English in Sociology, Political Science and Psychology.

Many master’s programs in the field of science are also taught in English.
Exchange students from overseas are privileged to receive guaranteed student housing. Living in student residences is the most affordable and most convenient housing in Heidelberg, and all exchange students are strongly encouraged to consider this option. Types of accommodation:
- single room sharing kitchen and bathrooms in groups of 2 – 4
- single room in dormitories
- small number of single apartments

Students can expect to pay roughly 300-400 Euro per month for student housing. Students must also pay a 450 Euro refundable deposit.

Derek Holmgren, PhD
International Programs Coordinator
Derek joined the UNCG Global Engagement Office as the International Programs Coordinator in 2023. He supports internationalization efforts at all UNC System campuses, including serving as the UNC System’s liaison for the Baden-Württemberg / UNC System Exchange Program. Derek has held two Fulbright grants to Germany, and he participated in undergraduate education abroad programs in Bosnia and Greece. He earned a PhD and MA in History from UNC Chapel Hill and a BA in History from the University of Denver. Derek is thrilled to help students experience new places and cultures.
