Classes from all faculties are open to exchange students, with a few exceptions listed below. Language and/or academic prerequisites may apply.
Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Molecular Medicine, and Psychology are not open to exchange students.
University College Freiburg (UCF): UCF is not generally open to exchange students. Exchange students may register for classes during UCF’s registration period III, during which the remaining open seats in classes are filled.
The language of instruction is German, with some courses taught in English. For detailed information please see current course catalogue and search for English-taught classes or consult study advisors at the faculties
Exchange students should have German language skills at least at level A1 (CEFR*). Regular classes held in German will require a B2/C1 level. Please note that all modules offered by the German Department require a C1 language proficiency

The International Office will provide accommodation in a student dormitory to all University of Freiburg Global Exchange students upon application. Housing consists of student dormitories with single apartments or single rooms in shared apartments. No meal plans are included in housing. Dining hall and cafeteria meals are paid per meal with university ID at a student rate.

Derek Holmgren, PhD
International Programs Coordinator
Derek joined the UNCG Global Engagement Office as the International Programs Coordinator in 2023. He supports internationalization efforts at all UNC System campuses, including serving as the UNC System’s liaison for the Baden-Württemberg / UNC System Exchange Program. Derek has held two Fulbright grants to Germany, and he participated in undergraduate education abroad programs in Bosnia and Greece. He earned a PhD and MA in History from UNC Chapel Hill and a BA in History from the University of Denver. Derek is thrilled to help students experience new places and cultures.
